STAGES OF TOOTH DECAY :
Healthy Tooth :
Enamel is the hard outer layer. Dentin is the softer layer beneath the enamel. The pulp chamber contains nerves and blood vessels.
White Spots :
If food particles or plaque gets deposited on tooth surface and are not cleaned, bacteria makes acid which demineralizes the enamel. The first sign of this is a chalky white spot. At this stage, the decay process can be reversed. Using fluorides at home and in the dental office can help the tooth repair itself.
Enamel Decay :
If demineralization continues, enamel starts to break down. The tooth can no longer repair itself. The cavity has to be cleaned and filled by a dentist.
Dentin Decay :
If enamel decay is not treated, the decay reaches into the dentin, where it spreads fast and tooth becomes sensitive.
Pulp Involvement :
If decay is left untreated, it will reach the tooth's pulp. This is where the tooth's nerves and blood vessels are found. The pulp becomes infected. An abscess (swelling) or a fistula (opening to the surface of the gum) can form in the soft tissues.
Root Canal Treatment (R.C.T.)
If your tooth's nerve chamber becomes infected by decay, root canal treatment is often the only way to save your tooth.
Root canal, also known as endodontic treatment cleans out the infected pulp chamber and canals.
Indications of R.C.T :
- Spontaneous pain or throbbing.
- Pain while biting or chewing.
- Severe decay till the nerve / pulp chamber or injury that causes an abscess (infection) in the bone surrounding the tooth.
- Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed).
- Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth.
- Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
- A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
STEPS OF R.C.T
Step 1 :
After the tooth is anesthetized, an opening is made through thetooth into the pulp chamber.
Step 2 :
The lengths of the root canals are determined.
Step 3 :
Unhealthy pulp is removed. Canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped using progressively larger endodontic files.
